As someone who has owned animals all her life I thought I was feeding the best quality food there was, from the top name brands to the over the top name brands, the organics, the pricey, the “special diets”. I still had dogs with constant skin issues cats who were either too fat or had “sensitive stomachs”. You know we all have pets with something, Animal vet health has got to be a bazillion dollar industry and we want what is the best for our pets so we do what they tell us is right .

When I made a decision to raise Maine Coon cats a few years ago, I knew I had to educate myself a lot more than caring for the cats that have been in my life through the years. I needed to know more than just the yearly shots and wormings, once in awhile trim their nails... I’m a rural pet owner, my animals always came in and out. I made a conscience decision to learn and know as much as I could on feline husbandry. I read, talked to breeders with many years under their belts, most live in the land of quality foods, the big ones, the pricey ones, ..I asked a few about raw, they warned of toxo and you name it, not many are trusting or maybe they just don‘t like change. My vet even made a face at first. In the beginning I dabbled, I bought some raw rabbit from the health food store, some ate it, some didn’t; it didn’t look too appetizing . I have ordered raw from every company on the internet. Tried them all. I was still not sold. Researching diets etc, I came across Hare Today and ordered some ground rabbit. It came frozen solid, packaged beautifully, professionally presented. I thawed that first roll and to my surprize it was not gross. This was good and it looked fresh, like hamburger. It didn’t have that grayish top layer like all the others. And it was simple, just rabbit, organs and bones; no fancy fillers, veggies or supplements I couldn’t pronounce. I was good with that. I passed it out, they ate it without hesitation and I was elated. That was over a year ago and my vet will agree that my cats couldn’t be healthier. Their coats shine, their eyes are clear. Babies start nibbling with mom around 3 weeks old and there is never an issue with diarrhea or weaning weight loss. There are many websites on raw feeding and you can take what you like from them and make them work in your feeding program. What works for me is keeping it simple. Raw rabbit, sometimes goat, I add L-Lysine and Salmon oil caps a couple of times a week and I sprinkle brewers yeast on everyones food every day. I cringe at the thought of opening a can and so do my cats.

When you buy a kitten from us we send you home with a pound of raw ground rabbit so you can transition your kitten to what ever you feed. For those of you who agree to keeping your new baby on the raw diet we applaud you and thank you for trusting our judgement. Please read on and go to the links provided to get a comprehensive idea of why we feel raw is best for your cat. My hope is always that you too will agree that it is the best way to feed.

A letter to Tracey of Hare Today.

It is very refreshing to see there are still honest decent people out there who aren’t afraid to live with the land, or get their hands dirty, who help deliver winter lambs, goats and assorted others and probably bottle feed a few.. People who schelp warm buckets of water in 15 degree weather down hills, and through muddy icey paddocks. Yes, those hardy folks and keepers of the earth whose calloused fingers are always stained with blu kote. Those who not only go to the bank (in clothes our former lives wouldn’t have been caught dead in). Never mind the fact that while at that bank we in evidently must go into the pockets (of what used to be a very nice Lands End jacket that has now become the barn coat) to grab a pen and watch as pieces of hay cubes and carrots spill out onto the counter. Personally, I now shrug as I quietly scrape it back into my hand and place it back in that pocket where it belongs! But, No, it’s never just the bank ,because while we’re in town we might as well go to the only market and check the PO box. Yep, I used to wonder what the summer folk thought. Now we just don’t care. We’re Townies. Whoda thunk it? So Thanks Tracey and family who have stepped up to make and honest life and then have the guts to live it! I am proud to do business with you and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship for us all, Warm regards, Cathy Pettey
